Eroge Review: School Days

Hello again! This is Yami. I am bringing you today my favorite eroge (and almost my favorite game) of all time; School Days. If you have heard of nice boat, you probably are a little familiar with this game. Anywho, on to my review!

Allow Kotonoha to guide you.

 School Days
PC (2005) / PS2 (2008)
Eroge / Visual Novel
Overflow

Where to begin… School Days is not your typical slice-of-life eroge. Far from it.

Story

OMG SHES LOOKING AT ME!!
You play as the main male character, Itou Makoto. He is starting his first year at Sakakino Academy. Makoto is a pretty plain guy and does not really standout. Every day as he is going to school he sees busty quiet girl named Katsura Kotonoha, whom he starts to like.

Makoto hears a stupid rumor going around school that if you take a picture with your cell phone of the person you like and no one sees it, that person will like you back. He thinks it’s stupid but he goes along with it and takes a picture of Kotonoha the next day on the train.

Fuck. Found out.
That day at school, Makoto’s new seat mate, Saionji Sekai, notices the picture of Kotonoha on his cell phone. Sekai offers Makoto some help with getting to know Kotonoha. At first he is like “Uh, no.” but he eventually agrees. A couple of lunch meet-ups and a date later, Makoto officially begins to date Kotonoa. Sounds pretty average right? Let’s keep going.

Meanwhile, Sekai is proud of herself that she got Makoto and Konotoha to date. However deep down she is extremely jealous of her friend and soon realizes she also likes Makoto.

SKANK!
One afternoon on her way home from school, Sekai spots Makoto waiting for Kotonoha for their date. Makoto sits with Sekai and tells her how he is really thankful for her help and feels indebted. He tells her that he wants to repay her in any way he can. Sekai thinks he is being silly but decides that he can repay her with a kiss. She then leans over and kisses him as her train reaches the station. Sekai then wishes him luck on his date and bolts to the train, leaving the  poor guy dumbstruck waiting for his girlfriend.

…This is where the story (and madness) begins.

Game Play

It is really simple. You are given two choices (sometimes three) at a time and you choose the one you want. You can save at anytime (which is nice). So if you pick the wrong option you can  always reload your game and go back to that spot again.

As with all dating sims (and visual novels) there is an affection gauge. With School Days, there are multiple girls you can end up with but the affection gauge is just for Sekai and Kotonoha. To get the other girls you have to unlock and fulfill certain events. That can get tricky but with the ability to save whenever you want, it shouldn’t be so bad.

What is great about School Days is the fact that it is like an anime. It is fully animated (including the sex scenes)! None of that picture, sound effect sex scenes for this game. You get to watch   the smut happen.  /shot

Another good thing about this game is that once you unlock a scene, you can go back and watch the scene again. There are A LOT of scenes in this game that gets saved so have fun with that.

Characters
Left to right: Kokoto, Nanami, Otome, Hikari, Kotonoha, Sekai, Setuna, and Makoto. (I am missing Taisuke.....)

Ugh. So the characters in this game are all interesting. Good job Overflow. Each character has their own personality and they really pull you into the game. Some of the characters are really hate-able (depending on what you like and dislike naturally) and really love-able. They really mess with your feelings at times -.- I found myself screaming at my computer screen at times with certain events…. I got really into the game. The characters really help bring the story out.

Itou Makoto: The main male character. He starts off pretty plain and normal but towards the end you are going to want to kill him. He is a douche.
Katsura Kotonoha: One of the main female characters. She is really quiet and body cautious. She is constantly picked on by Otome and her friends. She is on the student council.
Saionji Sekai: The other main female character. She is the opposite of Kotonoha. She is out going and friendly. Her best friend is Kiyoura Setsuna.

Kanroji Nanami: A girl on the basketball team who is on an athletic scholarship. She has a boyfriend. She is also friends with Otome and Sekai, from middle school.
Katou Otome: She is a tom-boy on the school’s basketball team. Makoto and her are friends form middle school.
Kiyoura Setsuna: Quiet and serious. She is best friends with Sekai. She is part of the student council with Kotonoha.
Kuroda Hikari: A peppy and immature girl. She is good friends with Sekai and has a huge crush on Sawanaga Taisuke.

Katsura Kokoro: Kotonoha’s younger sister. She is really bubbly, talkative, and sweet girl.
Sawanaga Taisuke: Makoto’s idiot best friend. He is oblivious to Hikari’s feelings and is in love with Kotonoha.
Here is Taisuke.

Endings

Good ending with Kotonoha

Normally I wouldn’t talk about how the game ends but School Days is known for its endings; especially the bad ones. So, let me take the time to explain this to you.

In the PC version, there are 21 endings all together to experience. Fifteen of them are good where Makoto ends up with one of the four datable (do-able) girls in the game.
                                7 for Katsura Kotonoha
                                5 for Saionji Sekai
                                2 for Kuroda Hikari
                                1 for Katou Otome

There is technically one more “good” ending and that one is with Kiyoura Setsuna but this one is considered a hidden ending. To get this you have to trigger one of Kotonoha’s or Sekai’s good endings. Out of the remaining six endings, two of them are harem endings.

Here is what makes School Days so awesome. In the PC version there are three bad endings. In each ending either Kotonoha, Sekai, or Makoto dies in a violent way. If you want to spoil the epicness of the bad ending, watch the video below.

Click if you dare >.>

In the PS2 version, all the sex scenes are edited and so is the blood from the bad endings. However, there are five more bad endings and the original three bad endings are extended (due to the violence of one, it was slightly changed.) With the new bad endings, each one deals with one of the main characters being pushed in front of a train. Makoto and Kotonoha die in one each and Sekai dies in two. In the last bad ending, both Sekai and Kotonoha die.

Voice Acting

The voice acting in the game is PERFECT. Each character matches their voices perfectly and to a “T”.  I am not too sure about how famous the voice actors are (I know they are cover up names   for famous seiyuu)..... but it is really good. The voices in the games are the SAME voice actors for  the anime. Just to let you know.

Music

I.Love.The.Music. There is a total of 33 tracks, eight of them are vocal. 25 of the songs were arranged by Kiriko who also sings the opening song. The ending theme song is sung by Kuribayashi Minami and the bad ending theme (MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE SONG) is sung by the talented Itou Kanako. There is also a Christmas ending theme song sung by Rino. It is a really cute song ;~; I wish I could find it for download *coughs* Sekai and Kotonoha both have their own sung ending theme songs sung by Yozuca and Hashimoto Miyuki consecutively. The two sub-heriones of the story also get their own theme song sung by sung by Yuria. I personally like Kotonoha’s theme song the best *coughcough* There is one insert song that is sung by the famous Momoi Haruko! It is a really effing cute song ;~; I really like it… It captures the moment so well when it is played. Overall, the soundtrack is AMAZING. The background music fits the overall story and the vocal songs are great! Each song adds a lot to the game. It really messes with your emotions… especially Itou Kanako’s song.

Art

I honestly love the art of this game. It is colored nicely and the character designs are lovely. Each character is easy to distinguish between and the backgrounds are very detailed. The game (as mentioned above) is fully animated. It is like you are watching an anime but you have control over the outcome of the story.

…Need more?
Lastest game from School Days
School Day’s has two spin offs. Summer Days takes place during the summer (duh) in an alternate universe and the main female role is Kiyoura Setsuna. Most of the original cast reappears in this version with the addition of a few more. Cross Days is School Days in an alternate universe. The main characters are all there but there is a new male lead and new girls to get with.

There is also an anime adaptation for School Days that I do recommend to watch. It is REALLY good and the ending is glorious (If you can’t handle gore, don’t watch it). There is also a manga that is short. It is okay…. But eh.
OPPAI OPPAI!

As for merchandise, there is a lot. Soundtracks, guidebook, and photobooks are a standard. There are also figurines that are awesome. Also, there are oppai mouspads that vary on the girl (XD) and dakimakura as well.

Recommend?
Hell yeah I recommend this game! It is not your typical eroge which is a total plus! On the downside though, this game is terribly long. It took me a day to get one ending (at least it was my favorite one >.>), though it is worth the effort trust me. No Japanese is necessary really if you just want smut. If you want to enjoy the rich story though, basic Japanese should be good enough. You will rage while playing I can guarantee that. The smut is glorious (though it is censored =3=) and the story is just wow. However, if you do not have a strong stomach (with blood and stuff), please try and do not get the bad endings.... I give this game a 5/5 stars :D
Kotonoha says 'bye, bye!'
